     Very Important Players (VIP)

Program for Players with Special Needs

Very Important Player Program Ensures Everyone Plays®!

VIP Soccer began in 1991 for Very Important Players and AYSO recognizes that all children need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance.  The VIP program offers that acceptance and carries our philosophy of Everyone Plays to new heights-giving everyone a chance to play.

 VIP Information  Very Important Player

VIP teams are typically small and coeducational. VIP teams are balanced by size, mobility and ability rather than by age. When numbers allow, older and younger age divisions may be formed as well. There are no upper age limits for VIP players. There are a wide variety of ability levels and sizes. Flexibility is the key.
Ensuring the success of players and volunteers in VIP is a priority, so each VIP program and operates within the existing structure of an AYSO Region to ensure that volunteers and players have the full support of the Region and it's resources.

AYSO VIP Program provides a quality soccer experience for children - and adults - whose physical or mental disabilities make it difficult to successfully participate on mainstream teams. VIP teams may include those who are:

  • blind or visually impaired
  • amputees or conditions that impair mobility
  • mentally or emotionally challenged
  • autistic
  • Downs Syndrome
  • Cerebral Palsy

    VIP Objectives:

  • To give ALL players the opportunity to play ball
  • To teach teamwork and fair play
  • To learn the basic skills of the game at the pace of each individual player
  • To encourage maximum participation for each player
  • And, most importantly, to have fun!
To encourage maximum participation for each player.

Program Goals

Kids with special needs are estimated to make up approximately 10% of the school-age population. Special schools and classrooms can isolate these children so the VIP Program has been structured to integrate our special kids into the rest of AYSO by using "buddies" from non-VIP teams to help these players both on - and off - the field.
Our goals for every participating player are:

Everyone Plays

Of the 1000 AYSO regions in the United States, nearly 200 have VIP soccer programs.  The VIP concept has been around since 1991, when a parent of a child with Down syndrome started a program in California.  AYSO has five philosophies - Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching and Good Sportsmanship.
