Coaches Handbook

AYSO Area 11E 2009-2010 Handbook

These pages are intended to provide information to AYSO Coaches on Guidelines and AYSO Official Policies...

Coaches' Handbook as a Acrobat PDF document (best for printing).

Prior to the start of the season, each Coach will be given a copy of the registration forms for each of the Players on his/her team. That form, which contains a medical release and authorization, must be brought to each game and practice. If the Coach will not be at a game or practice, it is his/her responsibility to insure that the Assistant Coach or other responsible adult bring the forms to the game or practice. In the event of an emergency, medical treatment may be denied or delayed for a child if the medical release and authorization form is not available.

How Do I Become A Coach?

If you have a child that is already on a team which has a coach, just let the coach know that you are interested in coaching and would like to help. Most of our coaches will be delighted to use you.

If you are interested in coaching, you can request a coach volunteer form from the Coach Administrator Julio Ortega. This will get you into the coaching database, and you will be added to the list. It is important that you fill in the form completely, and if check the birth date of the child you wish to coach so that you can mark the appropriate division

A few points to cover about sideline behavior:

  • Coaches must maintain within the Technical area. This is also known as the "Coach's box". This area is 10 yards from the Mid-field line. Do not venture down to the Penalty or goal area. Please keep within these confines during the game, and coach your game from there!
  • If a referee is doing something that you disagree with, please refrain from making any comments to the referee or Assistant Referee. Bring them to Joe Spiteri, Referee Administrator and he will take care of it.

Please remember that everyone out there is a human being and mistakes are going to be made by Players, Coaches, and Referees.

Teach your players good technique, good first touches, and how to maintain shape.

  • Please do not enter the field of play, during the game. During a water/substitution break, the clock is still running and the game is technically still going on. You can only enter the field of play with the permission of the referee.
  • Please remember to switch your player's positions around, although not necessarily all in one game.

Keep up the good work, and keep it fun!

  • Game Card Procedures

Before each game, the coach must give the referees an AYSO game card (Lineup).  These cards should be filled out before each game. This will help streamline the substitution process and simplify record-keeping after the game.
    1. Make sure your team number, colors and coaches names are correct.
    2. List the players numerically by jersey number.
    3. List the players full names legibly, last name first.
    4. List all players on the roster, even if some are absent or unable to play.
    5. Do not mark any boxes to indicate when players will be participating or staying out.
    6. Fill in the date, time and location of the game.

You should tell the referee which players, if any, are absent or otherwise unable to play.  Also, tell the referee which players will be sitting out during the first period of play.  The referee will make the appropriate notations on the card.

    The Offside Rule:

The offside rule is one of the most misunderstood in soccer. At the outset, it is often called the "offsides" rule, by unknowing spectators. There is no "s" at the end of "offside". Here is a great little video and explanation that will help you understand the offside rule, or Law 11.

    Coaches Code

    • Enthusiastically support and practice "Everyone Plays" and Positive Coaching philosophies of AYSO.

    • Be reasonable in your demands on the young players’ time, energy, enthusiasm and their performance on the soccer field.

    • Impress on your players that they must abide by the rules of the game at all times.

    • Develop team respect for the ability of opponents, and for the judgment of referees and opposing coaches.

    • Ensure that your players’ soccer experience is one of fun and enjoyment (winning is only part of it). Players should never be yelled at or ridiculed for making mistakes or losing a game.

    • Set a good example and be generous with your praise when it is deserved. Children need a coach they can respect.

    • Keep informed about sound principles of coaching, growth and development principles relating to children.

    • Enlist the support of your team’s parents in your efforts to instill the proper attitudes and values in the players.

    • Check equipment and facilities that you use. They should meet safety standards and be appropriate for the age and ability of your players.

    • Follow the advice of physician when determining when an injured child is ready to play again.
